The Magic Bench

Augmented reality (AR) is not something new and since long is being used for marketing and entertainment purposes. AR uses a technology that superimposes the information generated from a computer into the real world. With the help of AR, Disney has come up with an idea called as the "Magic Bench" where one can sit and see themselves beside their favorite Disney characters.

Magic Bench:

Magic Bench is embedded with a technology that lets anyone to see animated characters in real life without any special glasses or cameras. They have placed a mirror in front of the bench where the person can see his reflection along with the animated character beside him.

How does it work?

A camera and sensor are used to capture information about the person sitting on the bench and the surrounding. This in turn creates a calculation to make the animation react as per the situation. There are also installed haptic sensors on the bench that instils vibrations that is synchronized with the animation's movements and actions. Hence, giving the person sitting on the bench a complete experience.

In the video released by Disney, a person sitting on the bench is taken by surprise when the animated cartoon makes a sound and sit beside him. The person not only saw the animation but also felt it sitting beside him.
The magic bench comes with few limitations as well like any other augmented reality. The animations can be viewed by a single user only. Even a small group of people present at the same time can also experience the augmented reality at the same. It appears to be same for all as the same.

This magic bench was presented by Disney Research at SIGGRAPH 2017 which was the annual conference for computer graphics held in Los Angeles.
