Driveless cars: Are we there yet?

The technological expansion has led to the automation of our lives to many extends. One of them is done on cars that doesn't require a human to run it!
In movies, the depiction had been used many times of driverless cars. However, the concept seems quite real at present. The UK government funded $12 million project for revolutionizing the transportation which is predominantly targeted more towards making driverless cars a possibility. The project aims to devise a transportation that could reduce accidents that occur due to human driving errors.
Top car makers have already progressed  in making driverless cars a reality. The technology used for the creation of such autonomous cars have been long worked upon by Tesla, BMW,, Lexus and Mercedes. However, the most prominent is the Google's driverless car.

Google's Driverless Car:

The driverless car created by Google is equipped with huge amount of  sensors. Below are few worth to be mentioned:

  • Laser range finder
  • Front camera for near vision
  • Radar on the bumper
  • Aerial for Geo-location
  • Ultrasonic sensor on wheels
  • Multiple internal sensors like gyroscopes
  • Sensor to read road signs

The Google's car drives itself based on information acquired by these senses. It comprehends the road and its surrounding like humans through these sensors and make its move across the street. Even with these highly technically enable sensors there are many shortcomings of the Google's car. A road accident was reported of the Google car when it faced a predicament. When the Google car slowed down at a crosswalk to allow pedestrians to pass by, it pressed the brakes hard to save the pedestrians but it was severely hit by the car behind it. Thus putting the safety of the possible riders of the Google car in doubts.
Another incident was also reported where Google car failed to read four-way stop road signs because other human car drivers never followed the rule and kept on moving their car forwards. The Google car hence waited for the human drivers to to stop completely which they dint. Hence, immobilizing the google car and its sensors altogether.

Therefore, a lot of improvements have yet to be done to make driverless cars a reality.
